New Phillies RF Hunter Pence
There is nothing like a sweep to remind the Pirates that they aren’t quite contenders yet. Days like today are simultaneously good and bad. The bad: we discovered that Vance Worley is, in fact, human. I was completely content with believing he was unhittable but I guess this keeps me grounded. The good: the Phillies completed a three game sweep with an extra inning, comeback  against the Pirates. On a gorgeous day at the ballpark, Raul Ibanez provided plenty of spark for the Phillies offense.

Hunter Pence with Howard, Victorino, Rollins
This picture, tweeted by CSN Philly's Amy Fadool (@amyfadool), shows Hunter Pence standing around the cage with his new teammates.  Pence is going to look good in Phillies red for the rest of the season, but it appears as if someone needs to get him a new pair of red shoes.  Pence will wear number 3 for the Phils tonight, play right field and bat in the 5 hole.  Pence's arrival means that room had to be made on the current roster and Domonic Brown was optioned to AAA Lehigh Valley.  Along with Brown, Drew Carpenter was sent down to make room for Placido Polanco, being activated from the DL today. Polanco has not played since before the All-Star break and his return brings a better glove and bat to the third base position.  Michael Martinez did a fantastic job filling in for Polanco, and the playing time that he rece Tonight's lineup is scary good, James McDonald has his hands full tonight. Just see for yourself.

Around the MLB: The Braves are still looking for an outfielder after the Phillies traded for Hunter Pence last night, and it has been reported by Ken Rosenthal that they are looking at Pence's teammate in Houston and former Phillie, Michael Bourn.  With Jordan Schaffer and Nate McClouth on the DL, they need another player to fill the void that these two are leaving.

Happy Saturday! Steak and eggs for breakfast as usual. It was a great day for Philadelphia sports teams as the Eagles and Phillies picked up two big time players to help them in their chase for a championship.

The Phillies dominated the Pirates last night from the first inning on winning  10-3. Chase Utley went 3-5 and was a double shy of hitting for the cycle. Halladay pitched 7 scoreless innings giving up no runs and only 1 hit. The win ends the Phillies losing streak at two, and they haven't lost more than 2 games in a row since June 4th. Game two in the Pirates series is tonight at 7:05. More here.

During the Phillies big win, the announcement of the Phillies' acquisition of Hunter Pence was announced. Pence was acquired for the Phillies' top two prospects Jared Cosart and Jonathan Singleton as well as two players to be named later. The Phillies got their man, a right handed bat, and did not have to give up Vance Worley or Dom Brown making Phils fans happy. More here

The Eagles made a big move of their own signing former Raiders CB Nnamdi Asomugha to a 5 year $60 million contract. From what I heard, Asomugha was thought to be almost definitely going to the NY Jets, and the Eagles somehow landed him. This sures up a pass defense that gave up 31 TD's through the air last year, second worst in the NFL. More here.

The Eagles hold their first open to the public training camp session today at Lehigh. Asante Samuel and Jeremy Maclin are not present, but it seems that they have been excused for personal reasons. Desean Jackson, meanwhile, seems to be holding out for the longhaul. More here on why the Eagles' next move should be to pay their star WR.

The Uganda Little League team that had qualified for the Little League World Series this summer was denied Visas by the US because many of the players could not provide the appropriate documentation that proved their exact age. More here.

The United States Men National Soccer Team (USMNT) announced the hire of German legend Jürgen Klinsmann as the programs 35th coach in its history. The USMNT fired coach Bob Bradley earlier in the week as the team has not performed well since last summer's World Cup. More here.
