The BCS National Championship game was played Monday January 9th, 2012 as many of you know well. However, to me, and perhaps some others, the game fell somewhat short of our expectations. We were told by the media that even though this was a rematch of the two best teams in the country, LSU and Alabama. What we got wwas rather different from that, and more similar to their first meeting where LSU won 9-6.
First, the LSU offense failed to show up for the game. They did absolutely nothing, only having 4 plays in Alabama territory, and only managing to accumulate 92 total yards. Jordan Jefferson, LSU QB, could not read Bama's defense and played extremely poorly. On the other hand, Alabama's defense played outstanding. They were flying to the ball, blitzing, and it was due to them that LSU could not muster anything on offense.
When Bama was on offense, the game looked more like the two teams' first meeting. Bama was able to move the ball steadily, with a few long passes and RB Trent Richardson pounding the ball. However, Bama seemed to stall each time they neared the endzone, and went into the half up 9-0.
You had to think that LSU would figure out what they were doing wrong on offense and get back into the game. But, the second half showed more of the same for both teams. Bama hit two more FG's while LSU remained scoreless, and for the most part, offenseless. It wasn't till the fourth quarter the first touchdown was scored and the game was put out of reach. Bama's Richardson took a hand-off, bounced to the outside, and was gone. 21-0 Bama wins their 14th National Championship.
Now I know LSU looked bad, but I personall think they deserve another game. Bama got one. As far as I'm concerned the series is tied 1-1, and game three should be coming up shortly. But, this is the BCS, and that isn't what happens.
Also, before the game, I thought LSU would handle business and there would not be much arguing. But now we can argue. Why did Bama get to go into the game not even winning their own division in their own conference? Oklahoma State won their division and was kicked to the curb basically because they're not in the SEC. Whats to say OK St would not have spread out either LSU or Bama's defense and provided a more exciting game for viewers.
So I guess the BCS got it right and matched the two best teams in the country for the national championship, but I think more should be given to teams that actually win their conference. To me, this year anyway, the BCS basically said, unless you're in the SEC, you don't count.
