The game started off very much in favor of the Explorers. DeMatha QB Beau English fumbled on the first play from scrimmage giving the Explorers a very short field to work with. One play later and a 20 yard run from senior Jordan Meachum puts the Explorers up 7-0. A three and out for DeMatha and the Explorers have the ball again. This time senior QB Kyle Shurmur find senior TE Charlie Hemcher in the endzone and less than half way through the first the Explorers lead 14-0. DeMatha goes on to score two unanswered in the second quarter, but misses the PA and the two point conversion. The Explorers and Stags trade TDs and the score is 21-20 with 2:30 remaining in the first half.
The Explorers drove down to the DeMatha 5 with 4 second remaining in the half. The play of the game then occurred as time expired. Kyle Shurmur flips to RB Jordan Meachum, Meachum fakes the run, drops back to pass, and finds Kyle Shurmur wide open in the endzone. Explorers head into the half up 27-20. The second half is where things start to get crazy. The Explorers score two touchdowns on Shurmur throws to Jimmy Herron and Charlie Hemcher while the Stags score one of their own. Going into the fourth the Explorers lead 41-26. We can skip over the final minute details again. All that matters is that the Explorers pulled out a huge win over a big time opponent.
One thing to take away from this game is that DeMatha sophomore RB Anthony McFarland is an absolute beast. From my count he scored at least 4 of the 6 DeMatha touchdowns which included an 81 yard run in the second quarter. Late in the game he was pretty much an unstoppable force. He probably had over three fourths of the Stags' total offense.
Senior QB Kyle Shurmur continued his excellent play as well. He three for 239 yards on 23 of 30 passing including 4 touchdowns. He also ran for about 60 yards including a 42 yard read option which brought the ball down to the DeMatha 2 yard line. His main target was once again senior Jimmy Herron who caught for 93 yards on 8 catches and 2 touchdowns. Senior TE Charlie Hemcher also chipped in big time with six catches for 65 yards and 2 scores. Senior RB Jordan Meachum ran for 52 yards on 19 carries including one rushing and one passing touchdown.
This game was played in honor and remembrance of former La Salle alum Travis Manion and former DeMatha alum Brendan Looney who were very close friends both killed in combat.
