Looking At The La Salle Explorers
Senior Kyle Shurmur (a Vanderbilt University commit) is coming off of a fantastic season where he threw for 2,500 passing yards and 25 passing touchdowns. Returning along with him are seniors Jimmy Herron and Jordan Meachum. Jimmy Herron (A Duke commit for baseball) was the leading receiver from last year's team where he ended the season with 48 receptions for over 700 yards and 12 touchdowns. Jordan Meachum returns as the team's number one dual threat. Last year he ran for 900 yards and 6 touchdowns and also caught 24 passes for 415 yards and another 6 touchdowns, racking his all purpose yards total to about 1300. You think the offense is explosive enough as it is? We aren't done yet. Juniors Nick Rinella and Charles Headen return as potent weapons as well. Nick Rinella blossomed as another dual threat half back and wideout receiving for 325 yards and 3 touchdowns and rushing for another 420 yards and 6 touchdowns. Charles Headen will play a bigger part as a wideout this year with the graduation of former number 2 wideout Levi Hardey. Last year Headen caught for about 300 yards and 3 touchdowns. The question in this offense is the front line. Four senior offensive linemen graduated, so it will be interesting to see how the seniors and younger juniors and sophomores adjust to their new roles. There is not doubt that the Explorer offense will lead the charge in the air and on the ground.
The Explorers' defense has always been fantastic. The one empty role that will be looked to fill is the vocal leader. Last year's leader Zaire Franklin, who has gone onto play at Syracuse, led the defense as the leader. Seniors Jimmy Herron (FS), Aidan Kerrigan(DL/MLB), and AJ Greseszak(CB) should be looked at to step up in leadership roles this season. Senior Keith Wagner also played a crucial role in the defensive line's success. The Explorer defense looks to be another potent part of this complete Explorer team.
The La Salle Explorers return the talent and depth on offense and defense to have another fantastic year and bring back the PCL Championship.
Looking At The North Penn Knights
North Penn graduated a large part of their offensive threats, but does return the surprise of their season, Junior running back Nyfease West. West was low on the depth chart in the beginning in the season, but turned out to be a major running threat for the North Penn team. He exploded for just under 1400 yards and 12 touchdowns. Despite having a star running back this year, North Penn graduated starting QB Austin Shearer, leading receivers Justin Hudimac and Nick wright, along with FB threat Luke Berry who rushed for over 900 yards and 13 touchdowns. With four of the five starting offensive linemen including all league selections Frank Tranzilli (Sr.) and Andrew Thomas(Sr.). North Penn looks to be a very run heavy team at least in the beginning of the season as they sort through choosing a new starting Quarter Back.
On the defensive end of things North Penn is looking to return a solid core of players. Defensive and Offensive star Luke Berry graduated leaving room for more players to shine in their respective roles. The one player who should be looked at to step up and fill in is senior Dorian Sobetsky who started as a sophomore two years ago and missed all of last season due to a non football related injury. The main strength of this defense is the secondary which returns leader Mike Liddy at CB and SS Mike Burns. Also returning on the Defensive Line is senior Kevin Vandenplas. Look for these seniors to really step up in a leadership role and perform at a very high athletic level.
Overall, North Penn returns enough players on defense and a solid running threat on offense to succeed in their Suburban One season.
