Heading into the half, the Explorers found themselves down three points to a very strong Conwell Egan team that took Roman Catholic into OT before falling. Coach Dempsey remained calm, "You guys are doing great, you took a punch in the mouth, but you guys are doing great." The Explorers found themselves down three, partly due to Egan only missing seven shots in the half, by a score of 33-36. They came out on a tear to open up the third quarter, bursting out for a 14-4 run to put them up eight. Led by the defensive effort of senior guard Shawn Witherspoon who posted three steals in the quarter, the Explorers only allowed FOUR points in the quarter.
Sophomore guard Jarrod Stukes, sitting at an intimidating 5'7, deserves more credit than the stats show. The growing guard only scored four points, but was tasked with matching up with Egan's 6'3 Chase Kumor, bound for DII Salisbury, for most of the second half. Kumor was limited to zero points in the third, and only posted four in the fourth. Much credit can be put towards Stukes who kept up the defensive pressure and played one of the best games of his season.
Senior guard Dan Corr continued his hot streak of shooting, hitting three from beyond the arc and chipping in five more points to finish with 14. Senior forward David Krmpotich and junior forward Shane Stark both chipped in nine points on limited touches, but gathered eight and seven rebounds respectively.
In a tough PCL test, the Explorers showed how valuable having senior guards really is. They are the true leaders and backbone of a talented team, and they will look to make some noise throughout the league. La Salle will move on to play powerhouse Neumann Goretti this Sunday at Neumann. Tip off is set for 2:30.
