This could be posturing given the escalation of rumors linking the Flyers and the Los Angeles Kings in talks over backup goaltender Jonathan Bernier. The Flyers do not have to exercise their buyout this off-season and could, theoretically, wait until next year to use it.
Bryzgalov has been a polarizing figure during his time in Philadelphia with the media and fans. The 32 year old Russian goaltender was 19-17-3 with a 2.79 GAA and a .900 save percentage. He has seven years left on his contract signed in June 2011 with a cap hit of $5.67 million.
Update (9:55 pm): CSN Philly is reporting that Paul Holmgren did not assure Rich Winter of anything. A statement from Holmgren reads, "I didn't assure Rich Winter of anything. When the time comes to do our business we will do whatever is best for our hockey team." This just keeps getting stranger.
