Just hours ago the Flyers reportedly had a deal in place that would have sent center Vinny Lecavalier to the Nashville Predators but the Predators didn't want Lecavalier's full $4.5 million cap hit for the next four years. Now that might not be a dead deal.
The Fourth Period reports the Predators still want to acquire Lecavalier and are willing to take on the rest of Lecavalier's contract except the $2 million bonus he is owed on July 1st.
Lecavalier is in the driver's seat when it comes to trade talk around him as he has a full no-movement clause meaning any trade agreed upon must be approved by Lecavalier. His name popped up as a possible target of the Predators in the wake of Nashville's hiring of former Flyers head coach Peter Laviolette. One of the reasons Lecavalier cited for signing with the Flyers was Laviolette and his system. Lecavalier only got to play three games in that system before the Flyers fired the coach back in October.
I'm surprised it took this long for other teams, even the ones with cap space, to be weary of Lecavalier's cap hit.
The former No. 1 overall pick didn't seem to fit in all that well in head coach Craig Berube's system and found himself relegated to a fourth line center role and a power play specialist on the Flyers' second power play unit. To show how far the former All Star had fallen in the eyes of Berube, Lecavalier only played 8:45 in Game Seven against the Rangers on April 30th and did not play in the third period.
The 34-year-old scored 20 goals and dished out 17 assists for 37 points in 69 games this season for the Flyers but only had one goal and one assist in the seven-game series against New York in the playoffs.
For a team as center-heavy as the Flyers being able to unload Lecavalier would be a God-send. New general manager Ron Hextall said he prefers younger players so if it comes down to picking between Brayden Schenn and Lecavalier, it appears Hextall has made his decision as he re-signed Schenn last week.
