What are the Phillies going to do?
In the short-term it appears that the Phillies like their chances with Asche. MLB.com's Todd Zolecki reports that the Phillies, both coaches and front-office brass, are impressed with Asche so far during his 45 game big league tryout. Asche is reportedly "the leader to with the third base job next season."
It is easy to see why people are impressed by Asche. The kid is a plus-defender at third base with a solid arm. He hustles every time he steps on the field. He didn't turn 23 until the end of June. And his bat is finally starting to come around. Asche is batting .248/.319/.416 with five home runs and 22 RBis on the year.
All that being said, Asche still has areas he needs to improve upon. The former Cornhusker is batting just .206/.317/.412 with one home run and 16 RBIs with runners in scoring position. When Asche has two outs and runners in scoring position he is even worse as he is batting .154/.214/.308 and just three RBIs in 14 plate appearances.
There are holes in his game but there is a whole lot to like about Cody Asche. Having him start at third base to start the 2014 isn't bad and there are worse things that could happen to a baseball team.
