Business Week published their 'Smartest Spenders in Sports' report today and wouldn't you know it, none of Philadelphia's teams cracked the top 30. The Flyers were the smartest spenders in Philadelphia checking in at No. 39. The next smartest team was the Eagles at No. 61 followed by the Sixers at No. 65. The Phillies were further down the list at No. 84.
There were a number of factors that helped rate the teams such as average payroll over the last five years compared to the league average, average number of wins over the last five years compared to the league average and average number of playoff wins over the last five years compared to the league average.
The Chicago Blackhawks took home the top spot followed by the St. Louis Cardinals, Boston Bruins, New England Patriots and the Tampa Bay Rays rounding out the top five. It is hard to argue with that. The Chicago Cubs can in dead-last (122nd) as the worst spenders in sports.
Some teams to note: Penguins (11th out of 122), New York Giants (32nd), Devils (43rd), New York Rangers (47th), Nationals (58th), Braves (59th), Cowboys (66th), Knicks (77th), Red Sox (86th), Yankees (92nd), Redskins (115th) and Mets (118th).
