The NHL Department of Player Safety announced today that Wilson is scheduled to have a hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety on Thursday over the phone. The hearing over the phone means a suspension could be for a maximum of five games.
With 4:43 remaining in the second period, Brayden Schenn was in his own zone with the puck near the corner boards. Capitals rookie Tom Wilson came charging in towards Schenn and hit the Flyers forward square into the boards.
Wilson received a five-minute major for charging and a game misconduct for the hit. The video of the hit is difficult to watch without cringing.
However, the Capitals don't believe the hit was dirty and head coach Adam Oates went as far as to say that he doesn't "think it’s a penalty at all." Washington general manager George McPhee went as far as to say it was a "great hit" by Wilson.
Flyers head coach Craig Berube seems to be on the same page as the league, "It’s a tough, reckless play a hit from behind."
We will find out the league's verdict on tomorrow.
