Kelly was seen at more Pro Days than any other head coach this year. In fact, longtime NFL executive and current NFL senior analyst Gil Brandt said he had never seen a head coach at more Pro Days in one year. As always, Kelly had a reason for doing what he did.
Birds 24/7's Sheil Kapadia caught up with Kelly to find out why he was at some many Pro Days. Kelly was straight-forward saying, "There’s so much more than just watching tape - finding out the people that coached him, finding out what the janitor in the complex says about him, finding out what the people in the cafeteria say about him, find out what he’s like from a learning standpoint, find out as much information as you possibly can."
Based on the offseason we now know Kelly wants high-character guys in his locker room and I love the method to finding out the character of the players - asking the janitors and cafeteria workers. I love that. The saying "be nice to those on the way up because those are the same people you say on the way down" really comes in handy here. I truly believe you can tell what kind of person someone is by the way they treat the people they think won't help them get to where they are going. Being nice because they are a nice person, not because they're trying to get something from you.
Chip Kelly continues to operate two steps ahead of everyone else.
