Don't let Saturday's 4-2 victory over the Rangers fool you, the Flyers defense needs an upgrade if they truly plan on contending. Steve Mason bailed them out but how many more times can he do that?
Look at Thursday's 7-3 loss at the hands of the San Jose Sharks. The defense was nonexistent and it left the goaltenders hang out to dry.
With the trade deadline looming, Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren needs to take a look around the league to see who is available that might help the Flyers. They could be in luck. TSN's Bob McKenzie reports the Buffalo Sabres have made everyone available on their roster, including defensemen Christian Ehrhoff and Tyler Myers.
Holmgren should be giving Sabres general manager Tim Murray a call.
Myers, 24, has regressed in recent years and has not been the threat he was when he first got into the league. To his defense, the team around him has regressed significantly. The 6'8", 228 lbs. defenseman is a hulking presence on the ice with a powerful shot from the blue line. He has eight goals and 12 assists this season for the lowly Sabres. His skating ability is good for someone of his size but the Flyers need quick, mobile defensemen. Myers signed a seven-year, $38.5 million deal in 2012 that carries a $5.5 million cap hit through 2018-19.
Ehrhoff, 31, fits the bill of offensive-defenseman that is thrown around so often. He has six goals and 23 assists this season for the Sabres and has been a steady contributor from the blue line for years. The 6'2", 203 lbs. defenseman signed a 10-year, $40 million with Buffalo in 2011 with a partial no-trade clause, which allows him to submit a list of eight teams in which he would not accept a trade. The $4 million cap hit he carries through 2020-21 is reasonable given his offensive contributions and durability in his career.
If I were Holmgren, I'd be going after Ehrhoff over Myers but I believe both would be welcomed in Philadelphia.
The trade deadline is Wednesday, March 5th at 3:00 pm.
