North Carolina at #6 South Carolina 6:00PM ESPN
To start off the season, UNC (last year 8-4, 5-3 ACC) will head to #6 South Carolina (11-2, 6-2 SEC) to face national sensation Jadeveon Clowney. Last year the Gamecocks lost star running back Marcus Lattimore to yet another injury and ended up with an appearance in the Outback Bowl, where Jadeveon Clowney really made a name for himself with this hit you have probably seen a million times. But UNC QB Bryn Renner and the rest of the Tar Heels are no push over. Look for this one to be exciting for most of the game.
Texas Tech at Southern Methodist 8:00PM ESPN
Not much going on Friday night in CFB, but if you want to watch a good inter state rivalry with a ton, and I mean a ton of passing, this is the one. Last year Tech QB Seth Doege threw for over 4000 yards. An exciting story out of Lubbock is the rise of walk on QB Baker Mayfield, who may be the future of the Red Raiders after Doege's career.
Villanova at Boston College 12:00PM ESPN3
First chance to see the Wildcats in action as they play to get some respect for joining the FBS. Plus its the first game of the day and lets face it, you aren't quite with it yet to get into some intensity.
Rice at #7 Texas A&M 1:00PM ESPN
Here is your first look at last year's Heisman Trophy winner, Johnny Manziel. With all of the off-season hype and controversy, its time to see the country's most electrifying quarterback get back to playing football.
Temple at #14 Notre Dame 3:30PM NBC
Temple sure does have a rough start to their 2013 campaign. They open up against the Fighting Irish in South Bend after their amazing run all the way to the National Championship. There is no doubt that Notre Dame will be looking to come out firing after the embarrassing loss to Alabama in the National Championship. Temple can hang with some of the best, but Notre Dame at home is a tough victory.
PENN STATE vs Syracuse (Metlife Stadium) 3:30PM ABC, ESPN
This is going to be fun. Penn State and Bill O'Brien start things off in East Rutherford against "New York City's College Football Team." Syracuse is playing their first ever game as a member of the ACC as well. PSU is not quite sure who exactly will be their starting quarterback this Saturday either. Right now it is between JUCO transfer Tyler Ferguson and new freshman Christian Hackenberg. Both the Penn State and Temple games will be great to switch back and forth between all afternoon.
#1 Alabama vs Virginia Tech (Georgia Dome) 5:30PM ESPN
The reigning national champs square off against the Hokies at the Chick fil A kickoff game at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. Could be a good game, but really don't see Alabama losing more than a single game again. Virginia Tech has had some unfavorable matchups in these big opening week games, playing and losing to both Alabama in '09 and Boise State in '10.
#5 Georgia at #8 Clemson 8:00PM ABC
The first Saturday prime time game of the year with Musberger and Herbstreit and it's going to be a great match up. Georgia QB Aaron Murray is returning for his senior year to avenge what could have been a National Championship berth in a hard fought loss to Alabama in the SEC Championship game-which in my opinion was easily top 3 best games of the entire year. If Georgia loses at Death Valley, things will start off very shaky for head coach Mark Richt, who will attempt to compete again for the SEC title. Beating Clemson in Death Valley is no easy task, especially recently under Dabo Swinney. Clemson had a very impressive 2012 losing only to ACC foe Florida State and a very hot South Carolina team at the end of the season.
#12 LSU vs #20 TCU (AT&T Cowboys Stadium) 9:00 ESPN
Another neutral site match up for the opening week. This one pits LSU against hometown (okay Ft. Worth is close enough) TCU. If you know me, you know I love TCU. I took a real liking to them during the BCS buster craze of a few years ago. Stemming from my dislike of the BCS system, it was great to see schools like TCU and Boise St mess up the "experts." Regardless, TCU is returning quarterback Casey Pachall, who left the team last year after a DWI. He is a great passer and looks to connect with wide out Brandon Carter once again, who is coming off hand surgery.
#11 Florida State at Pittsburgh 8:00PM ESPN
Ha! It's the only game that day so after your labor day party, make sure you watch my alma mater in their ACC debut. The game caps off the crazy five day stretch of college football. While Pitt may only put up a 5-7 record this year, they do provide some excitement now and again. Last year, Pitt upset then-ranked Virginia Tech, a game where VT was supposed to just roll over the Panthers. I'm not saying Pitt can upset Florida State under the lights, but it may prove to be an interesting game.
