The Minnesota Wild announced they have signed unrestricted free agent Christian Folin to an entry-level contract. Folin has played the last two seasons at UMass-Lowell. This comes not long after reports surfaced the Flyers, along with the Wild and Lightning, were finalists for Folin.
The 23-year-old Swede is a solid all-around player who posted five goals and 11 assists for 16 points in 37 games this season for the Riverhawks. The 6'3", 210 lbs. defenseman can really shoot the puck as he has one of the heaviest shots you will find. Look no further than when he shot the puck through the net. Yes you read that correctly - through the net.
For a large defenseman who uses his body, Folin can really skate. He brings a heavy shot on offense but Folin really separates himself by his play in his own zone where he is a top-notch defenseman.
I had the chance to watch Folin play back in November and, without knowing him prior to the game, the kid left a mark. I took a note on my phone of his number to look up later and that is when I discovered that I was not the only one who could see this kid has the potential to be something special.
I guess the allure of playing on the same blue line as Ryan Suter overwhelmed Folin compared to whatever the Flyers were selling. The missing out on Folin hurts but it doesn't hurt that the Flyers still own the rights to Shayne Gostisbehere who has been more impressive in his own right.
