97.5 The Fanatic's Mike Missanelli spoke of it yesterday on his show and now it is appearing again with Pro Football Talk discussing whether or not Chip Kelly is a conservative coach. Missanelli was a bit peeved about a decision Kelly made with the Eagles down 21-13.
With the Eagles trailing by eight and facing a fourth-and-six from the Denver 37-yard line, Chip Kelly opted not to go for it, not to send erratic kicker Alex Henery for a 53-yard field goal attempt, but to instead take a delay of game penalty and punt the ball.
Kelly does not believe that was a conservative call in that situation in the game and does not believe he is becoming a conservative coach because of the choice.
While I agree that he is not becoming a conservative coach, I find it hard to argue that the decision to punt the ball there is not conservative. An aggressive call would be to go for it on fourth-and-six while a still-aggressive decision would be to kick the field goal. The conservative call is the take the punt.
Now, did it really matter? Not really as Denver rolled to a 32-point victory. But, still, it was a conservative call in that situation. He is learning just like the young guys; unfortunately, it is pretty ugly on the field.
