That direction appears to be the 3-4 defense instead of a 4-3. The Eagles have been linked to San Francisco 49ers defensive backs coach Ed Donatell. Donatell was previously the defensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers from 2000-03 then in Atlanta for the Falcons from 2004-06. In addition to Donatell, Adam Schefter reported this morning that the Eagles interviewed Cleveland Browns’ linebackers coach Billy Davis to be their defensive coordinator. Davis has served as a defensive coordinator in the NFL with the 49ers and Arizona Cardinals.
It seemed like Donatell was a sure thing last week but it became less clear today. Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer is reporting that, in addition to Donatell, the Eagles are also looking at another coach that is preparing for the Super Bowl. Enter Ravens’ linebackers coach Ted Monachino. Monachino has never been a defensive coordinator at any level but is highly regarded by his players, like reigning defensive player of the year Terrell Suggs.
One thing that these candidates have in common is that they will most likely look to install a 3-4 scheme. Some of the Eagles players, like Fletcher Cox, translate well to a 3-4 but it remains to be seen how some other players like Mike Patterson fit.
