So what happened?
The Flyers, seemed to peak in late December early January. They were atop the Eastern Conference and seemed destined to finish the season in that spot. Then came the acquisition of Kris Versteeg, who was happily welcomed in Philadelphia. That happiness was short lived. Versteeg never seemed to mesh with the first place Flyers, and the win percentage of the Flyers since they signed Versteeg was 53%. The Flyers struggled mightily in the home stretch of the season but still managed to enter the playoffs as the #2 seed.
The playoffs were a struggle for the Flyers and the fans all together. The series with Buffalo should have only been 5 or 6 games. With Pronger in the lineup, the Flyers might not have lost two games 1-0. And with more solid goal tending, you could argue Buffalo wouldn't have scored half it's goals.
The Bruins series is a completely different story. The Flyers seemed uninterested in this series. Minus the 50 some shots and JVR's awesome opening 6 minutes in Game 2, the flyers really didn't do much of anything. The defense was exposed over and over. and the goal tending was incredibly disappointing and the Flyers were quickly swept.
On to the offseason. Personally I don't question Peter Laviolette much, but I didn't totally agree with how he handled the goalie (or lack of goalie) situation in the playoffs. But did he really have a choice? No goalie really had any type of sustained success. Now many fans are calling out for the Flyers to go trade for, or sign a veteran proven goalie. But is this really the right choice?
In other news, Holmgren released the names of 5 Flyers today who will need surgery this offseason. The list is Betts (finger, Leighton (hip), Meszaros (wrist), Versteeg (stomach), and Richards (wrist). Hartnell (hip), Carter (hip), and Pronger (back) will be evaluated this week to see if they too will need surgery.
In my opinion, the Flyers are fine, and will continue to be atop the Eastern conference for years to come. There are no huge changes that need to be made. However, who wouldn't be opposed to them going out and getting a big young veteran defensemen? Who knows if Pronger will be back?
