ESPN's Chad Ford has put together his first mock draft of the year in preparation for the 2014 draft. It is no secret that the 76ers are going to be bad next year and are positioning themselves for a solid haul in the June draft.
ESPN projects the Sixers to end up at 20-62 which would be the worst record in the NBA beating out the Suns at 22-60. For the sake of this mock draft, they list the picks by record; thus, the 76ers would select first overall. Ford projects the Sixers taking Kansas freshman small forward Andrew Wiggins whom Ford, along with seemingly every other draft expert, believes is the best prospect to come out since LeBron James. A combination of Michael Carter-Williams, Nerlens Noel, and Andrew Wiggins would provide Sixers fans with a young core that could be difference makers in the league.
But it doesn't stop there.
The Sixers traded their lone All-Star last year, Jrue Holiday, to the New Orleans Pelicans for Noel and NOLA's 2014 first round pick. The Pelicans are projected to finish 37-45 which would give them the 11th overall pick. Ford has Louisville freshman power forward Montrezl Harrell (6'8", 235 lbs.) heading to Philadelphia. Harrell shares a lot of similarities to Noel in that they are both plus defenders with great rebounding abilities and are super athletic.
A few things to remember: if the Pelicans' 2014 selection falls in the top-5, the Sixers will not get the pick. Also, despite how bad the Sixers appear, they are not guaranteed the top spot in the draft (unlike the NFL and MLB) due to the lottery.
Mock drafts are going to be what makes this season bearable because it does not appear that the 76ers' on-court product is going to be something to write home about.
