The Flyers have acquired defenseman Andrew MacDonald from the New York Islanders for forward Matt Mangene, a 2014 third round pick, and a 2015 second round pick. The 6'1", 190 lbs. defenseman will wear No. 47 for the Flyers and is expected to be in the lineup tomorrow night against the Washington Capitals.
MacDonald, 27, has four goals and 20 assists this season for the Islanders. He is incredibly durable playing in every game this season and averaging 25:25 of ice time, which ranks eighth in the NHL. MacDonald hasaveraged 23:20+ minutes of ice time in each of the last four seasons. I'm sure the Flyers goaltenders will love to hear this as MacDonald leads the NHL with 198 blocked shots.
This is a great get for Holmgren as he gets a more-than-capable defenseman who is sound defensively and can contribute offensively with a cap hit of only $550,000. Now the question is who gets moved as the Flyers have eight defensemen but it looks like Andrej Meszaros is on his way out with Boston showing interest.
The trade deadline is tomorrow at 3:00 pm.
