They traded Phantoms defenseman Danny Syvret to the New York Rangers in exchange for forward Kris Newbury. Newbury, 31, is a rugged forward who can hold his own in a fight. He spent most of his time last season with the Rangers' AHL affiliate, the Connecticut Wolf Pack. He has four goals and five assists in 72 career NHL games between the Rangers, Red Wings, and Maple Leafs.
The trade ends Syvret's fourth stint with the Flyers organization. He had six goals and 34 assists for 40 points in 76 games with the Phantoms last season but put up a plus-minus rating of minus-21. His most memorable moment with the team was his 2010 goal in the Winter Classic at Fenway Park.
In addition to the trade for Newbury, the Courier-Post's Dave Isaac is reporting that the Flyers have made four qualifying offers today to defensemen Erik Gustafsson ($850,000), Brandon Manning ($715,000), Oliver Lauridsen ($643,000) and forward Eric Wellwood ($594,000).
Wellwood's offer comes as a bit of a surprise as Wellwood suffered a horrific accident on the ice in which he severed part of his Achilles tendon and is expected to be out until after the New Year.
These are just depth moves but I think that Gustafsson and Lauridsen are going to be great value signings. Gustafsson has set a high bar for himself coming into the season.
