Timonen sounds like he will be a Flyer for a little longer than expected. The Philadelphia Daily News’ Frank Seravalli is reporting that the Flyers are close to a one year, $6 million extension that would keep him in a Flyers uniform through the 2013-14 season. Currently, Timonen is in the final year of the six year, $38 million contract he signed in 2007.
The Flyers originally acquired the Finnish defenseman, along with Scott Hartnell, in a trade with the Predators that sent a first round pick to Nashville. This season, Timonen has one goal and four assists. In 407 games with the Flyers, Timonen has 28 goals and 183 assists for 211 points. With the Flyers, he is averaging 22:54 of ice time a game and is averaging 22:46 this season. He has won the Barry Ashbee Trophy for the Top Flyers Defenseman three of his five seasons with the club.
