The Devils started the game with heavy pressure on Ilya Bryzgalov but he turned them away. The Flyers did not get a ton of pressure in the first but were able to end the first period in a 0-0 draw. The Flyers came out flat in the second period again. Flyers coach Peter Laviolette called a timeout just 3:07 into the second period the Flyers got on the board. Rookies Matt Read and Sean Couturier, along with Wayne Simmonds, stayed in pursuit of the puck in the offensive zone and had strong fore-checking in which Wayne Simmonds stayed after the puck until he found Matt Read in front of the net for the first Flyers goal. Three and a half minutes later Kimmo Timonen’s blast from the point was redirected by Scott Hartnell for his 21st of the year and give the Flyers a 2-0 lead.
The two goal lead didn’t last long as newly acquired Devil Alexei Ponikarovsky redirected a shot by Bryzgalov just 28 seconds later to cut the lead to 2-1. As they headed to the third period, the Flyers were being outshot 24-13 by the Devils. In the third period the Flyers went on the power play and, with 11:53 remaining, Claude Giroux found Scott Hartnell who blasted a one timer past Martin Brodeur to give the Flyers a 3-1 lead and it was Hartnell’s team leading 22nd goal. With 2:52 remaining, the Devils pulled Brodeur and 28 seconds later, the man who played the best two way game, Wayne Simmonds put it in the empty net for the Flyers fourth goal of the afternoon and solidified the victory.
Today’s game was a huge momentum game for the Flyers as they head home for the 3:00 pm tilt tomorrow with the Boston Bruins, who lost in overtime today to the New York Rangers. Unfortunately for the Flyers, GM Paul Holmgren announced that he will be out indefinitely with a concussion.
