The second period was a whole different story. The Flyers came out firing. Dnany Briere got the Flyers on the board just 2:38 into the period beating Mathieu Garon top shelf to tie the game. Forty two second later Jaromir Jagr gave the Flyers a 2-1 lead beating Garon top shelf again. The goal ties Jagr with Brendan Shanahan for 11th on the all-time goal list with 656 goals. Flyers scored a goal with about five minutes left in the second when Wayne Simmonds’ centering pass hit the skate of a Lightning defenseman and redirected over the shoulder of Garon to give the Flyers a two goal lead and 3-1 heading into the second intermission. It was after the Simmonds goal that Giroux was injured.
The third period did not start off well. Just 55 seconds into the period, Tampa Bay captain Vincent Lecavalier cut the Flyers lead in half when he beat Ilya Bryzgalov for his 11th of the year to cut the lead to 3-2. The Flyers answered exactly four minutes later when Matt Carle beat Garon top shelf (noticing a trend) to give the Flyers a 4-2 lead and they would never look back.
