They have begun the year 1-7-0 and are currently the only team in the NHL that has not yet scored three or more goals in a game yet this season. They've been held to just one goal five times already this season.
That doesn't seem to matter to captain Claude Giroux. Following a tough practice at the Skate Zone in Voorhees on Monday, Giroux met with the media and definitively stated that the Flyers "will make the playoffs."
If they're going to do it, they need to be better on the man-advantage. The power play has been atrocious as they didn't scored a power play goal from the second game of the year until last night. The Flyers went 0-for-2 last Tuesday night against the Vancouver Canucks to make them 0-for-17 on the power play in their five games leading up to Thursday night's game against Pittsburgh when they went 1-for-4 on the man-advantage. It didn't matter much as they are still just 3-for-33 on the season.
I don't think the season is over and the Flyers are dead and buried. It is October 22nd and they've played just eight games. It'd be crazy to count them out. However, they have not shown that they are a playoff caliber team over the course of the first eight games and will likely have to show a different product on Thursday against the Rangers.
