The Flyers got on the board in the first when Claude Giroux, who was wide open in the slot, ripped a wrist shot past Brodeur to put the Orange and Black. Giroux got the pass from James van Riemsdyk who drew all the attention of the Devils defensemen behind the net then spotted Giroux in the slot.
After a back and forth second period in which there wasn’t a ton of action, the Flyers came out quickly in the third period. Less than three minutes into the third, Flyers rookie Matt Read got a centering pass from Scott Hartnell and Read took a shot that went in just over Brodeur’s shoulder. That was Read’s first career NHL goal as he put the Flyers up 2-0. Two minutes later, Wayne Simmonds crashed the net and got a scrappy goal that extended the Philadelphia lead to 3-0.
A few minutes after his goal, Simmonds dropped the gloves with David Clarkson. Simmonds landed the majority of the punches and ended delivering the shot that dropped Clarkson.
The Flyers ended up outshooting New Jersey 29-20 but went 0-for-8 on the powerplay; whereas, the Devils didn’t fare much better as they went 0-for-5 on the powerplay. The Flyers get back to action on Wednesday night for their home opener against the Vancouver Canucks. The puck drop is set for 7:30pm at the Wells Fargo Center.
