Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren announced yesterday that Hartnell would be out indefinitely with a left foot injury. The Flyers are awaiting results on tests run on his foot. He was setting up in front of Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur when he was hit on the foot by a Kimmo Timonen slap shot from the point. Hartnell went down immediately favoring the foot but finished the game. He was seen limping badly with ice on his foot following the 3-0 loss to the Devils on Tuesday night.
The last time Hartnell has missed a game for the Flyers was during the 2009-2010 season. In his six seasons with the Flyers, Hartnell has only missed three total games while playing all 82 games three of the last four years.
The loss of Hartnell and the suspension of Brayden Schenn mean that just four games into the season the Flyers top line from opening day is down to just Claude Giroux. On the year, Hartnell has one assist for one point in three games. He has recorded 13 shots on goal and 13 penalty minutes to go along with a team-high eight hits.
