The Flyers announced on Tuesday winger Wayne Simmonds and defenseman Mark Streit will wear the "A" this season as alternate captains of the Flyers. Two alternate captain spots opened up this offseason with the trade of winger Scott Hartnell and the loss of Kimmo Timonen to blood clots.
Streit, 36, had a strong season for the Flyers in 2013-14, his first in Philadelphia. he became the first defenseman since Chris Pronger in 2009-10 to score 10 goals in a season posting 10 goals and 34 assists for 44 points. Streit will be expected to step up and replace Timonen on the Flyers top power play unit in 2014-15.
Simmonds, 26, is a key offensive threat for the Flyers. The 6'2" forward scored a team-high 29 goals last season while setting career-highs in assists (31) and points (60) in 2013-14. Simmonds is a huge contributor on the Flyers power play as 15 of his 29 goals came on the man-advantage last season.
