That all changed just three games into the season as the All-Star forward broke his foot in a 3-0 loss to the New Jersey Devils. Hartnell, 31, would be sidelined for a month missing 16 games in the lockout-shortened season that compressed the schedule making a missed month even more impactful.
When Hartnell returned to the Flyers lineup, he was less than stellar and certainly a shell of the player he was just a year prior. Hartnell posted just eight goals and three assists for 11 points in 32 games which is way off of the pace that saw him score 37 goals and dish out 30 assists for 67 points in 2011-12 playing alongside Claude Giroux. What helped his 37 goals was Hartnell's career best 15.9% shooting percentage.
The former first-round pick will be under the microscope this season as he begins a six-year, $28.5 million contract extension signed in August 2012. Hartnell has a lot to prove as his 37 goal season seems like eons ago. He has had time to get himself healthy and, hopefully, he can get chemistry with whoever he ends up playing with.
Hartnell played well when he stationed on a line with Danny Briere and Ville Leino. He then played even better when anchored on the Claude Giroux line in 2011-12. Anchor him on a line early in the season and hopefully he can return to form.
