Erik Gustafsson, 24, made tremendous strides last season in 27 games with the Flyers as he scored three goals, added five assists for eight points while averaging 20:09 of ice time. He went on to log 30+ minutes of ice time per game in the World Hockey Championships this spring.
It makes sense that the Flyers announced today that they have signed the restricted free agent to a one-year, $1 million contract with the club.
It would be wise for Paul Holmgren to keep a close eye on Gustafsson early on this season and try to lock him up long-term at a reasonable price. He was progressing at a fantastic rate last year and, if he can pick up where he left off, he will be in line for a nice pay-day. I think Gustafsson could provide the Flyers with one of their puck moving defensemen of the future.
