Flyers forward Vinny Lecavalier said Wednesday afternoon that he believes fighting is "part of the game" and he would vote against banning fighting in the NHL.
Ironically enough just 10 minutes into the first period of the Flyers' season-opening game against the same Maple Leafs, third-year forward Brayden Schenn dropped the gloves with former Flyer Joffrey Lupul. Lupul got away with boarding Claude Giroux behind the Toronto net but Schenn would not let Lupul off without making him pay for taking liberties with the Flyers' captain.
Also, I think it is important to note that fighting is not allowed in hockey. It is illegal; hence, the five-minute major penalty. It is a "major" penalty - not a minor - meaning you can't come out of the penalty box until you have served the full five minutes no matter what happens. I think that is getting lost in the "should the NHL ban fighting?" debate.
