The first period began with Rangers forward Andreas Thuresson scoring just 2:36 into the first period. The first fight of the night came seven and a half minutes into the first period when Zac Rinaldo absolutely pummeled Dale Weise. Then came more controversy, Tom Sestito got a five minute major for boarding and a game misconduct for his hit on Andre Deveaux (video below). (Notice the Sean Avery sucker punch to Wayne Simmonds at :28). After back and forth play and a few dumb Ranger penalties that neutralized the Sestito major penalty, Jaromir Jagr scored on the Flyers powerplay to knot the game at one.
The Flyers controlled the third thanks to a goal by Braydon Coburn. Wayne Simmonds had an empty netter to give the Flyers a 5-3 win.
This Flyers team is different from last year. A lot of new names but I like the new look Flyers. They are fast. It seems like every one of the guys can skate out there and they don’t get pushed off the puck easily. They play two way hockey, extremely versatile and they move the puck unbelievably. Claude Giroux is not the only one who can pass now. Jagr and Jake Voracek threaded the needle tonight on numerous occasions. And, he has been hyped as a “Philly guy,” but I was a skeptic. Tonight, Wayne Simmonds showed the making of a guy that Flyers fans will love. He played physical, protected his teammates, and showed offensive ability. This Flyers team looked great tonight and I am excited for the season opener next Thursday.
