The team announced that they have signed veteran defenseman Hal Gill to a Pro Try-Out contract and he will report with the veterans to Flyers training camp on September 12th.
Gill is a massive body on the blue line standing at 6'7" 243 lbs. He appeared in 32 games last season with the Nashville Predators but not register any points - they aren't really his thing. Gill is a defensive defenseman who stays at home and clears space. He does it well and he has for a long period of time as he has played in 1,102 NHL games in his 15-year career. Gill anchored the Montreal Canadiens defense in the 2010 Eastern Conference Finals against the Flyers.
The gritty Massachusetts-native did not make too many friends in Philadelphia when he made comments to TSN that the fans were "loud and obnoxious" and that it is "easy to hate the Flyers."
At 38 years old, it will be interesting to see how much Gill has left in the tank. Unless the Flyers move some defensemen, it is difficult to see him making the roster. But with the way the defense played last season his presence in Philadelphia cannot hurt.
