The team announced Saturday that they have signed goaltender Steve Mason to a contract extension. Terms of the deal were not disclosed but TSN's Bob McKenzie reports it is a three-year, $12.3 million deal worth $4.1 million per year beginning in 2014-15.
Mason, 25, got off to a fantastic start of the season but has begun to come back to earth of late - still better than anything the Flyers have seen over the past few years. He is 19-11-5 with a 2.48 GAA and a .917 SV%.
I like the deal. I think the Flyers got caught up in giving deals with five years or more which partially explains why they are consistently up against the salary cap. Three years is reasonable and $4.1 million is fair for a guy playing like a No. 1 goaltender.
