The Flyers announced on Wednesday they have traded restricted free agent forward Tye McGinn to the San Jose Sharks for a third-round pick in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. The Flyers had extended a qualifying offer to McGinn on Monday.
McGinn, 23, played in 18 games last season for the Flyers scoring four goals and adding an assists for five points. In 54 games for the Phantoms, McGinn scored 20 goals and added 15 assists for 35 points.
How the Ron Hextall got a third-round pick for a guy who didn't have a defined role on the Flyers is astounding. This is likely the maximum value for McGinn and while the trade doesn't clear any cap space, it does capitalize on a depth player who didn't project much of a future with the organization.
