Finland's Leijonat reports former Flyers defenseman Janne Niinimaa has retired from hockey. He was the Flyers' second round pick (36th overall) in the 1993 draft. He played 143 games for the orange and black before being traded to the Edmonton Oilers in 1998 for defenseman Dan McGillis and a second round pick.
Niinimaa, 38, last played in the NHL in 2007 when he appeared in 41 games for the Montreal Canadiens. He has played in Switzerland and Sweden over the last six seasons. Overall he played in 741 NHL games scoring 54 goals and recording 265 assists for 319 points.
