MLB.com's Alden Gonzalez is reporting that the Angels have released reliever Ryan Madson, who the team signed to a one-year, $3.25 million deal this off-season. He signed a one-year, $8.5 million deal with the Reds prior to 2012 but was forced to have Tommy John surgery before throwing a pitch for them.
Madson, who turns 33 on August 28th, has not pitched since the 2011 NLDS against the St. Louis Cardinals. He was great for the Phillies in 2011 as he went 4-2 with a 2.37 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP to go along with 32 saves in 60.2 innings of work.
I thought it was a huge mistake to let Ryan Madson walk and give Jonathan Papelbon that bloated contract in November 2011. It turns out that it was the right choice to let Madson walk... it still doesn't justify the bloated Papelbon deal. Either way, the Phillies are 17 games out of first place and neither they nor Madson have been successful since 2011.
