These two teams met in a controversial game. The Flyers, trying to break the Lightning’s 1-3-1 zone trap, stalled and held the puck behind their own net waiting for the Lightning to break the zone. Days later, the NHL Board of Governors met and ultimately decided that even though they did not think either team handled the situation properly, no team violated any rules.
Tonight the Flyers (17-7-3) enter the game in first place in the Eastern Conference, just ahead of the Florida Panthers (shocker, right? Don’t look now but former Flyer Kris Versteeg is playing really well for Florida). The Lightning (12-14-2) enter in 13th place in the Eastern Conference and have won just three games over their last ten. However, in their past five meetings with the Flyers, the Lightning are 4-0-1.
The Flyers are still without Chris Pronger and it appears as though they will be without him for longer than expected. The Flyers announced yesterday that the captain would be out indefinitely with concussion-like symptoms. Brayden Schenn is out with a concussion which, as Philadelphia Sports Daily reports, he felt fine after he got the concussion. Schenn is out indefinitely. James van Riemsdyk returned to the Flyers lineup Wednesday and is expected to play tonight at the Wells Fargo Center.
The Lightning have also been bitten by the injury bug as well. Former Hart Trophy winner Martin St. Louis is out indefinitely with facial and nasal fractures after being hit in the face by a Dominic Moore shot in practice on Thursday.
The last time the Lightning came to Philadelphia they escaped with an 8-7 victory last November with Stamkos recording a hat trick for the Lightning. Claude Giroux enters the game with 37 points and leads the NHL in points and is two goals behind Toronto forward Phil Kessel (18 goals) and Ottawa forward Milan Michalek (18) for the NHL lead in goals scored.
Puck drops at 7pm at the Wells Fargo Center. You can catch the game on TV on ComcastSportsNet and on the radio on 94.1 WIP.
Below is a video of Braydon Coburn and former Flyer Steve Downie mixing it up last time these teams met in November.
