Cliff Lee (4-7, 3.50 ERA, 1.15 WHIP) went 6.1 innings allowing two runs on eight hits earning a no-decision in the Phillies 3-2 win over the Rockies last Friday night. In one start against the Marlins this year in June, Lee was shelled for six runs on ten hits in 4.2 innings in Miami. Last year, Lee was 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA against the Marlins while throwing nine innings in his two home starts against the fish.
Josh Johnson (8-11, 3.81 ERA, 1.28 WHIP) allowed two runs on four hits in seven innings last Thursday to get the win over the Brewers. Before last Thursday, the Marlins had lost each of Johnson’s five previous starts. Coming off of shoulder surgery, Johnson has been wildly inconsistent. He faced off against Lee and the Phillies on June 29th going six innings and allowing just one run on four hits to get the win. Johnson’s other start against the Phillies this year came at Citizens Bank Park where he allowed six runs on eleven hits in just 3.2 innings of work.
The Phillies are looking to move above .500 for the first time since June 3rd (28-27) and looking to continue gaining ground on the Wild Card leading Cardinals, who hold a one game lead over the Dodgers, 2.5 games over the Pirates, and four games over the Phillies and Brewers. Carlos Ruiz gets the day off after playing last night and going 1-for-3 with another RBI. In the two games since his return from the DL, Chooch is 3-for-5 with 2 RBI. Good thing Chooch is getting a breather against Johnson because Ruiz, Chase Utley, and Ryan Howard are a combined 0-for-12 with six strikeouts against the Marlins ace.
The Marlins are looking to get a win before they head into a weekend series against the NL Central Division leading Cincinnati Reds. In order to get the win, rightfield Giancarlo Stanton needs to play a big role in the game. After going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts on Monday, Stanton took Roy Halladay 371 feet to left field for his 34th homerun of the season. Stanton has homered in seven of his last eight road games.
