Carlos Ruiz is a free agent and appears to have some suitors on the open market. The Phillies have to develop some contingency plans in case the fan-favorite walks. ESPN's Jayson Stark is reporting that the Phillies have made catcher A.J. Pierzynski their top choice if Ruiz decides to leave.
Pierzynski, who will be 37 come opening day, had a solid year last season with the Rangers batting .272/.297/.425 with 17 home runs and 70 RBIs. He is a career .283/.322/.428 hitter who averages 16 home runs and 74 RBIs. He is one year removed from his career year in Chicago when he hit .278 with 27 home runs and 77 RBIs for the White Sox.
He is a polarizing figure and is a little rough around the edges - ask Michael Barrett.
