The Flyers announced on Wednesday starting goaltender Steve Mason is out with an injury for Game 1 against the New York Rangers on Thursday. Backup goaltender Ray Emery gets the start while Cal Heeter will be his backup.
Mason's injury happened in the second period of the Flyers' 4-3 overtime victory over the Penguins on Saturday. Pittsburgh forward Jayson Megna drove Flyers defenseman Andrew MacDonald hard into Mason. The 25-year-old netminder finished out the period but was replaced by Ray Emery to start the third period.
Philadelphia recalled goaltender Cal Heeter from Adirondack Saturday night and he made his first NHL start on Sunday against the Hurricanes.
Emery, 31, went 9-12-2 this season with a 2.96 GAA and a .903 SV% with two shutouts. He has posted good numbers against the Rangers in his career going 7-2-0 with a 1.87 GAA and a .936 SV% to go along with two shutouts.
