The team is slated to get Zac Rinaldo back from his four-game suspension but the status of Steve Downie is still up in the air as he has been scratched from six of the team's final eight games. As well as enforcer Jay Rosehill has been playing recently, will the Flyers keep a somewhat one-dimensional player in the lineup during the playoffs?
Then there is the curious case of Jason Akeson. The 23-year-old forward has played in two career NHL games - the final game of the 2012-13 season and the final game of the 2013-14 season. He posted a goal last year's finale and Akeson played a solid game on Sunday against the Hurricanes registering an assist on Matt Read's first period goal that got the Flyers on the board.
"He’s easy to play with," Read said of Akeson following the game. "He made a great pass to me tonight. He’s made a couple passes in to Coots [Couturier].
"When he has the puck he creates time for himself to be able to make plays like that. He’s an all-around player."
Overall, he played 13:22 while registering 34 seconds on the power play and 32 seconds on penalty kill. Akeson brings some versatility to the Flyers lineup and seemed to mesh on the third line with Read and Sean Couturier.
"It looked like he’d been here before," said Read when asked about Akeson's poise. "So it was fun to watch him out there and being on his line made things easier for us."
I'm sure it helps having Read advocating for Akeson's play but ultimately the decision comes down to head coach Craig Berube. Berube seemed pleased with Akeson's play following the season finale.
"He's a heads up player," said Berube. "He's got skill and he has composure with the puck. He's a skill guy but he's got composure."
When asked about whether or not it was realistic to see Akeson in the playoffs, Berube gave a short but direct response, "Yeah, sure."
As for Akeson, he only had one thing in mind when asked about if he was trying to make the playoff roster with his strong performance on Sunday.
"I just wanted to try to give every reason to show that if I do get the call then I will be ready."
