With that being said, his play might not even be helping the Phillies. The Sporting News has compiled a list of the worst everyday players in Major League Baseball and Michael Young tops the list for third basemen with a WAR (wins above replacement) of 0.1.
Young, 36, is slated to become a free agent at the end of the season and will almost certainly not be in a Phillies uniform next year. He is hitting .268/.331/.390 with eight home runs and 37 RBIs in 115 games this season for the Phillies. Young is a career .300/.346/.441 hitter who averaged 15 home runs and 85 RBIs over his 14 years of service.
I don't think anyone can argue that Young is a veteran presence and all-around good guy to have in the clubhouse but, in the same breath, he should've been shipped out at the trade deadline. I like Young which might explain why I was a little surprised he was considered the worst everyday third baseman in baseball.
