Matt Read, Sean Couturier, and Steve Downie have all found their stride of late. Read has posted back-to-back two-goal games entering Monday night's contest in Florida. Couturier got his first goal of the year last Tuesday against Ottawa and now has a point in three straight games. Downie has recorded six assists in the six games he's played since returning from a concussion.
Coincidence? Does not appear that way.
"I think, just for us three, we're just trying to keep it simple," Read explained. "Get pucks deep, cycle pucks, get pucks to the net, and out work the team in their zone. If we're playing against their top line, they can't score in their defensive zone, so we concentrate on getting pucks deep."
The chemistry finally looks right. Couturier, who looked uncomfortable offensively early on, has clicked with the Read and Downie.
Maybe Downie was the missing link?
"He's [Steve Downie] been fun to play with," said a confident Read. "He's very smart, knows how to get in the open, when he has the puck he makes the right plays. It's helping Sean [Couturier] and I out a lot. We're building as a group of three out there and we're getting better every game."
Flyers fans are certainly happy these guys are clicking. It is no coincidence that the team's resurgence coincides with this line coming to life.
Read put it perfectly, "If we're plus players at the end of the night, we've done our job and our team is going to succeed that way."
