He has a high basketball IQ and has dazzled scouts with his out-of-game testing. He was the top rated forward at the NBA Combine as all of his athletic testing was off the charts. His scores were spectacular for a forward and he even beat most guards when it came to his athletic testing.
For a seven-footer, he is on the light side (230 lbs.) which limits how much power he has on the post. He does not translate as a center in the NBA but, rather, as a power forward. He will be spending team workouts proving that he can make the switch to the 4 in the NBA. His agent claims that he is able to play the 4 because he has a perimeter game.
Fit for 76ers:
If Zeller proves that he has a perimeter game, there is not a team in this league that couldn’t find a fit him in their rotation. A 7’0” power forward with high basketball IQ, a perimeter game, ball-handling skills, and out-of-this-world athletic ability (sounds a little like Dirk Nowitzki) would be phenomenal for the 76ers. Zeller was a high-motor guy at Indiana which will no doubt endear himself to the Sixers fans.
Two questions remain. Will he be there with the 76ers select 11th overall on June 27th? Is he a guy they have confidence in that he does, indeed, have a perimeter game? We will have to see.
