The Oakland Raiders announced Asomugha will retire as a member of the Raiders tonight at a 6:00 pm news conference. Asomugha was the 31st overall pick in the 2003 NFL Draft and played in Oakland from 2003 until 2010 when he left as a free agent.
Asomugha signed a five-year, $60 million deal with the Eagles in the summer of 2011 which proved to be a collassal failure. Asomugha recorded just 94 tackles, 16 passes defended, and four interceptions in his two seasons in Philadelphia.
The 32-year-old cornerback often looked lost on the field outside of his man-to-man comfort zone and, even in man-to-man coverage, he struggled with tackling. Asomugha had clearly lost a few steps from his Raider days which made him a liability in the secondary. A The Eagles cut him in March but he signed a one-year deal with the 49ers, who released him in November.
