In the second period of Tuesday night's 2-1 loss to the New Jersey Devils, Flyers forward Steve Downie skated with the puck in his own zone before passing the puck up ice. After he passed the puck as he approached the blue line, Devils forward Tuomu Ruutu came across and hit Downie targeting his head.
Downie was not injured on the play but Ruutu was given a two-minute minor for a head-shot.
The NHL Department of Player Safety surprisingly has not scheduled a hearing for Ruutu regarding the hit.
The 31-year-old Ruutu was acquired by the Devils at the trade deadline from the Carolina Hurricanes. In 60 games this season, Ruutu has six goals and 14 assists for 20 points. he registered an assist on both Devils goals on Tuesday night.
