The Edmonton Journal reports that the Oilers might be interested in taking $4.5 million off the Flyers' hands.
Monitor the Philadelphia Flyers. They’ve got to do something here. Chris Pronger is going to go on LTIR, they’ve bought out – compliance bought out – Daniel Briere. I wonder if a guy like Braydon Coburn might be available. In my mind he’d be a perfect fit in Edmonton as a top-four, left-shot defenceman to potentially play with Justin Schultz, but I’m not sure where Paul Holmgren’s headspace is at. The Flyers have got a lot of money tied up in the back end with the signing of Mark Streit.
Stauffer frequently breaks news involving the team, so this should not be seen as simple speculation; likely, Stauffer’s comments mean that the Oilers are seriously considering making a pitch for the Flyers’ defenceman, and it’s a move that hypothetically makes sense for a number of reasons.
No one has any idea what the Flyers are going to do next, not even other NHL executives. General manager Paul Holmgren said "going to be a wild ride over the next little while" for the Flyers.
It always is, isn't it?
