Defenseman Kris Letang, 26, has one more year left on his four year, $14 million deal that he signed at the end of 2010. His cap hit of $3.5 million is reasonable considering the defenseman tallied 38 points in 35 games last season. Letang is an offensive-minded defenseman who is lethal on the power play.
The problem is that the Penguins and Letang cannot agree on a salary. Letang reportedly turned down an eight year, $54 million extension yesterday and his agent countered with an eight year, $62.5 million deal that the team balked at. Where do the two sides go now?
"Trade" is beginning to enter their vocabulary.
Now, you're probably wondering why this matters to Flyers fans? At the end of the day, it almost-positively won't matter but Letang is interested in Philadelphia as a landing spot if a deal can't be made with the Penguins according to Inside Pittsburgh Sports.
It's interesting that Letang is interested in Philadelphia because I thought that the Penguins were bred to hate the Flyers and everything associated with the City of Brotherly Love. All that being said, I cannot envision any scenario in which Letang gets traded from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia. It's just inconceivable for me to imagine the Flyers sending valuable assets to their hated rival and vice-versa.
