The Flyers head coach has been largely silent this off-season but came forth in an interview with Flyers Insider Anthony SanFilippo. Laviolette told SanFilippo that he is excited about the team and the moves they made in the off-season to acquire Vincent Lecavalier, Mark Streit, and Ray Emery.
Laviolette noted that one of the biggest attributes of Lecavalier and Streit that people are overlooking is their leadership as both served as team captains last season with the Islanders and Lightning respectively.
It was interesting to hear that Laviolette is still a big fan of Emery. He had to the goaltender for a few games when he took over for the Flyers in December 2009 but reminisced back to working for TSN when he was raving about Emery's play with the Flyers before his devastating hip injury.
Laviolette has his work cut out for him as he is looking to make the Flyers Stanley Cup contenders after the team missed the playoffs last season for the first time since 2007.
Personally, I think this year is a fresh start. Laviolette gets to have a regular training camp and the league returns to a full 82 game season. The way the team finished last season and the moves made this off-season have me excited about the possibility of the Flyers playing playoff hockey next spring.
