CSN Philly's Jim Salisbury reports that Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. "has no idea" if first baseman Ryan Howard will return from his torn meniscus this season. Amaro added to the statement that there is "no reason to rush him back" as it seems pretty obvious that the Phillies are not going to be contending for anything this season.
Everybody heals differently and this is a perfect example. Erik Kratz was back in less than six weeks from his torn meniscus but Howard, who had successful surgery on July 10th, does not appear like he will be ready before the end of the season. Get him healthy and bring him back next year.
In 80 games this season, Howard was hitting .266/.319/.465 with 11 home runs and 43 RBI. He wasn't healthy last year playing in only 71 games after rupturing his Achilles tendon in October 2011. We thought he was healthy for part of this year but then he revealed that he was playing in pain for much of the season.
